The Fairy Garden

The idea for our Fairy Garden occurred in late April 2017 when we noticed that someone (a child or fairy?) had neatly arranged twigs and leaves around a gnarled root of our old maple tree (see photo below at left). We realized this was likely the home of special beings. Erik began some gentle excavation around the roots and under the grass; then Sara planted a cozy and colorful community of miniature plants. Not long after the landscaping began, many tiny garden critters moved in. Much to Sara’s surprise, most of these new residents shared her passion for books, and before long, the base of the maple transformed into a neighborhood of reading critters, complete with a custom-built, miniature Little Free Library.

There’s a short stone path around the tree so small (and careful larger) feet can walk around the Fairy Garden to find hidden creatures. The stone is local limestone left over from building the foundation of our house in 1883. In May the Fairy Garden is filled with blooming spring bulbs, and by mid-summer, there is a pink rose hedge lining the path. The roses are thornless and kid-friendly.

Every now and then we notice that new treasures appear in the Fairy Garden. We’ve found a fairy-sized blanket, painted rocks, miniature kitchen equipment, special stones, new critters, and more. We are happy when these items find their new home!

Enjoy!
